Need a quick screenshot for a ticket, a how-to email, or auditing changes? This guide shows the fastest Mac shortcuts, how to capture windows or selections, where files are saved, and how to include the mouse pointer or a timer. It works on macOS Mojave and newer, including Sonoma and Sequoia.

Quick shortcuts

  • Entire screen: Press Shift + Command + 3.
  • Selected area: Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag to select.
  • Window or menu: Press Shift + Command + 4, then tap Space and click the window.
  • Screenshot toolbar: Press Shift + Command + 5 for capture and recording tools.
  • Copy to clipboard instead of saving: Hold Control with any shortcut. Example: Control + Shift + Command + 3.
  • Touch Bar (supported models): Press Shift + Command + 6.

Using the Screenshot toolbar

Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the toolbar. You can capture the entire screen, a window, or a portion, and you can also start a screen recording. Click Options to:

  • Choose where screenshots are saved or select Other Location…
  • Set a timer (5 or 10 seconds)
  • Show or hide the floating thumbnail
  • Include the mouse pointer in screenshots
  • Remember last selection

Where are my screenshots saved?

By default, macOS saves screenshots to your Desktop with names like Screenshot [date] at [time].png. In the toolbar, go to Options → Save to to change the folder permanently. You can also drag the floating thumbnail directly into a document, email, or chat to share it instantly.

Pro tips

  • Exclude window shadow: When using the window capture (Shift–Command–4 then Space), hold Option while you click.
  • Annotate quickly: Click the floating thumbnail to open Markup. Add arrows, text, highlights, and shapes, then save or share.
  • Customise shortcuts: Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots to remap keys.
  • Record your screen: In the toolbar, choose record options to capture a video with audio from your microphone if needed.

Troubleshooting

  • Shortcuts not working: Check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots and ensure they are enabled.
  • Screenshots missing: Search Finder for “Screenshot” or confirm the save location under Options in the toolbar.
  • Need the cursor visible: Open the toolbar (Shift + Command + 5) and enable Show Mouse Pointer in Options.
